Choosing the best photography equipment can be a time consuming process. Generally the two best places to purchase equipment are from Amazon and from B&H. For reviews and a great discussion forum I visit dpreview.
Below is a listing of the gear that I use.
Camera
Nikon D90 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera
One of the most popular cameras on flickr.
My initial review that I made nearly 2 years ago.
Lenses
This is the lens that is on my camera 90% of the time. It covers a similar range as what most kit lenses cover while being sharper and better in low light conditions. It also is able to achieve a fantastic shallow depth of field thanks to it’s F2.8 aperture.
The Nikon equivalent will cost you about $1300 more.
If you have seen my flickr stream then you probably have noticed that I am a fan of landscape photography. Landscape photography is about capturing the whole scene, and to do that best you will want a nice wide angle lens. It doesn’t get much wider than this lens and for the price it is hard to beat.
The Nikon equivalent will cost you about $600 more.
A.k.a. the “nifty fifty.” This is currently the only prime lens that I carry with me, mostly because they aren’t cheap, but this is an exception. Whenever I take pictures in very low light situations, like bars, this is the lens that I rely on. It has an even shallower depth of field than my 17-50 2.8 and produces some amazing bokeh.
Overall this is great for portraits and low light photography.
Tripod
